【Artist’s Description】 "Steam Locomotive" is an automatic musical instrument located at Kaohsiung Train Station. It combines the distinctive sounds of a steam train whistle and performs on the hour under the station’s dome, creating a unique ritual exclusive to Kaohsiung Train Station. Although steam trains are no longer seen today, the sound of steam accompanied by whistles and bells remains part of our language. Even children who have never ridden a steam train still say "choo choo" when playing train games to imitate the sound of an approaching train. We have transformed two important sound elements from the station’s past to create a new instrument unique to Kaohsiung Station. With a steam engine chimney design and timed musical performance, this instrument, located in the underground plaza, announces the hour and symbolizes the arrival at Kaohsiung. The station's signature music will be composed by musician Blaire Ko, who is dedicated to translating Taiwan’s traditional music, including the transformation of the Bunun tribe's pre-hunting gun song into the High-Speed Rail's chime. In the future, Kaohsiung Station’s hourly chime will connect the soundscape of steam trains with hopes for the future.
